Candidly, being liked or accepted by the other team does make me fear that I'm headed in the wrong direction--or at least the direction away from where my in-group would like me to be.

My conclusion is if a godbeing created human beings, it did a horrible job. It created us with so many mental quirks and flaws that it seems we're not wired to discover the "truth" of anything - much less a godbeing. We can barely grasp the "truth" of the world around us and other human beings, much less some godbeing and what it supposedly says.
Its certainly a difficult road to travel--having faith in a God that in many ways we can't fathom or seemingly really know. I think you're right though, in a sense. I just think additionally, in a miraculous way, God provides us a way to know things we otherwise would never be able to know.
