Physicist reaction to piece of evidence that might, if true, overturn a fundamental claim of currently accepted physical theory:

Wow! That is astonishing! If that was true the universe would be even stranger than we thought it was, and the field would be open for some fascinating remaking of all our theories (maybe I might be the one to succeed, and be even more famous than Newton and Einstein?). But before we get too excited, let's check this out thoroughly. So far any effect that seems to flatly contradict that theory has always been shown to be illusory, and this effect may go the way of all the others ... but all the same, you never know ...

I just replied to Zak over there.

Edit: and more replies. Read the first long one.

So how does this prove Kolobian astronomy is true?

The title Zak chooses is hilarious:

"E=Mc2 disproved?"

....

Here is my proof:

Moksha,

I've got to credit you with a good catch. Thank you!

Tarski,

LOL! with one pic, you demolished half of MDD -- no pun intended.

Well, the junior tier taking on this one I have to say are among the least educated and the dullest of wit to ever enter the trade. The senior Mopologists must be weeping over what the Lord has left them with as disciples.

Tarski, I don't know how you can cooberate with that bafoon by discussing nurtinos. After all, there were 16,000 experiments!

Chap, this is a simplistic dismissal of religion as a whole that really doesn't reflect the attitudes of all the faiths it dismisses.

When the Big Bang Theory came out the Roman Catholic Church made the rather bold (in my opinion) decision to embrace that theory, while, as I understand it, Evangelicals are nearly universal in denouncing it. So I guess I don't see how you can conclude that "pretty well any other religion" has such a suspicion of (rumored or otherwise) scientific discoveries.

The Big Bang was invented by a monk, Kev. But let me ask you this. if the Catholic Church embraced the theory, did it do so because it found the evidence convincing, or because the theory bore superficial resemblance to its theology?

Chap is exactly right.

Most religions have backed way off today. They've realized they've got nothing but owned by science, and make fewer and fewer staunch claims that will clearly conflict.
