Is the Journal of Discourses a valid Church reference...?

I noticed on another thread that the pro LDS poster named 'subgenius' used the Journal of Discourses to quote a past Prophet's words in defense of a point (s)he was making.

I thought the Journal of Discourses was now classed as 'suspect' material and was no longer officially recognised by the Church.

This is as clear as mud. LOL

If quotes from the Journal of Discourses are found within official Church literature, such as Ensign articles, or Sunday School manuals, then those specific quotes within the context they are given are considered official Church doctrine. However, the JoD as a whole is not considered official canon.

I thought part of B.C.'s definition had to do with who publishes the material.

The JOD is approved only as far as it supports current doctrine. Otherwise, it's trash. The trick is figuring out which is which.

The JoD is not published by the Church. I'm not sure who the publisher is off the top of my head.

If it is published elsewhere I would assume that it is done with the permission of the Church? Wouldn't the Church hold the copyright on it?

it certainly could be viewed as a "standard work" but it is definitely not canonical scripture.

i certainly "consider" it as follows:

The Journal of Discourses is not an official publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a compilation of sermons and other materials from the early years of the Church, which were transcribed and then published. It included some doctrinal instruction but also practical teaching, some of which is speculative in nature and some of which is only of historical interest.

subgenius, I guess this comment makes it hard to understand which parts of the Journal of Discourses is doctrinal instruction, which is practical teaching, which is speculative in nature and which is just of historical interest. How can a person determine what content applies to which category?
