People who cheat on their spouses do not necessarily lose romantic feelings for them, assuming any letter written by Joseph expressing affection for Emma were expressing true feelings. It's not like one can't fake this, but I do think Joseph maintained feelings for her as she did for him even though they had many many issues. This is so common. How many women maintain love for Husbands who mistreat then, even physically and mentally abusing them.

Yep, love and hate are on the same side of the fence. Indifference is on the other side.
