I wonder if it was right for the Church to urge its members to contact legislators to oppose the MX Missile?

I am sure some were upset about it. Thing is was the church opposed to it because of the missles per say or because of the location.

Whichever, SWKs speech Gods of Steel was one of the best ever,

It was just the Church exhibiting a bad case of NIMBY.

The church may mutter a quiet parting shot with regards to the 9th district decision, but they will not be getting back into the ring. The gloves have been set aside.

But this is the only thing the Church does now: read a letter in sacrament meeting referencing the Proclamation on the Family ... and that's it. No more organized battle like we saw in CA. I think the Brethren learned their lesson in CA -- the Church took a tremendous beating, and for what? In the end they lost after spending untold millions in dough and good will. I believe we'll never see the Church bring a Prop. 8-like battle again, and from now on it will be nothing more than a form letter read in sacrament meeting which basically does nothing. The Church had to learn the hard way.

Less than 24 hours after personally filing Referendum 74 with the Washington state attorney general’s office, Joseph Backholm of the Family Policy Institute of Washington and John Paulton of Focus on the Family met with “Mormon Church Leaders” in Washington. A staffer at the Family Policy Institute initially disclosed the meeting by phone, the meeting was later confirmed directly by Joseph Backholm.

It is unknown what was discussed or agreed to at the meeting, or which “Mormon Church leaders” attended the meeting. However given the church’s pivotal involvement in Proposition 8, and the razor thin edge that gay marriage supporters in Washington have in the polls, it isn’t a stretch to think that Focus on the Family is keen to have significant involvement from the Mormon church in the effort to gather 120,000 signatures by June. During proposition 8, members of the church were encouraged to donate time and money to support the proposition, which won at the voting polls but has been struck down by the courts (currently under appeal).
