This is an old clip still worthy of attention. Professor Peterson recently posted it on his blog, and it's still as relevant as when it was first recorded, so I'm re-posting it here.

Enjoyed watching that, hearing President Kennedy and seeing David O. McKay again.
That was then.

I'm not against criticism. I think there's a place for it. It's necessary. It's important in bringing some balance, and even humility. It's important to remind us about hypocrisy and inconsistency. But in the end, though it may be unfathomable to some, there's a "reason" why some of us continue to believe, who see beyond the inconsistencies, and who choose to keep believing.

Re: JFK on Mormons.
The LDS Church has much to recommend it, I agree. Almost every spiritual experience I have ever had has been mediated in some way through the LDS Church or its scriptures.
I have sacrificed greatly to the LDS Church due to my love for it and my belief in its truth claims.
It is because of my love for the LDS Church that I wish it would do a better job in correcting past wrongs by officially acknowledging its racist past and moving forward with humility and dignity.
I fear it can do neither without such an acknowledgment.

I agree, Consig. They were out of line with the Book of Mormon.
(Emphasis added)8 O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought with them before the throne of God.
9 Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, which is the word of God, that ye revile no more against them because of the darkness of their skins; neither shall ye revile against them because of their filthiness; but ye shall remember your own filthiness, and remember that their filthiness came because of their fathers. (Jacob 3:8-9)
Because of that, I still think the Church should issue a formal apology, and acknowledge that in the first place they ignored the teachings of the Book of Mormon, and that racist Alvin Dyer-like speeches were offensive and totally uncalled for.

Re: JFK on Mormons.
Now THAT is a very powerful passage from the Book of Mormon when applied to this issue, isn't it?
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Ray.

Re: JFK on Mormons.
I'm sure that JFK really liked Mormons.
For example, given JFK's demonstrated marital fidelity, we can infer that he greatly admired Joseph Smith.

I completely agree with this.
