I'm not denigrating their action, which I see as exactly what Christ would be advocating. I'm highlighting how embarrassing it is for the Church leadership when members display far more Christ like attributes than they do.

The head honcho's were at the opening of a bank and at the opening of a shopping mall, but when it comes to fighting for people to be treated equally where are they?

According to your argument on Zee's thread, if the members participating in Mormon Building Bridges are tithe payers, are they homophobes?

My argument, is that tithe paying Mormons are funding homophobic actions taken by the Church. Tithe paying Mormons going on this march are akin to shareholders in Jack Daniels going on a march to try and stop the evils of whiskey drinking.

In actual fact, it would be a much bigger statement of support if the members involved in Mormons Building Bridges openly withheld their tithing and other donations unless and until the Church allows equality for gay people. Sort of "put your money where your mouth is".

I'm not really sure what to think about this. If they mean what convention would suggest they should mean when they march in a pride parade-- then right on. But, that's pretty incompatible with the current LDS position on homosexuality, which is pretty clear.

If they qualify their support with anything resembling "love the sinner, hate the sin" or "It's okay to be gay-- now be celibate," or "Technically, gay sex is an abomination, but I'm not going to personally judge you because it's between you and God," that's another story entirely. My skepticism probably has something to do with how proud a certain LDS relative of mine was of that BYU "It Gets Better" video. To him and his Provo friends it was a sign of monumental progress and hipness-- but they still think marriage equality poses a threat to the family, and that gay people should just be celibate, and/or have enough faith to engage in the institution of heterosexual marriage.

by the way, I enjoyed those Onion quotes.
