If the disciples are praying, they are doing it wrong. Jews and early Christians did not do the 'joined hands' prayer gesture. They used instead the orans posture with raised hands:

Chap- that way is too sacred. If you are endowed, then you can pray that way. This painting is depicting the less sacred way to protect the innocent.
