It wasn't particularly clever, and no one needed to have it explained. There may be more than one meaning for "color," but "women of color" has a clear racial connotation in American English. I'm sure they thought they were being oh-so-cute, but they just come across as oh-so-ignorant. And white. Very white.

"Women of color" gets 4.4million hits on Google and 1.2million pic results, the first of which is for a lesbian website.
