Doctor Scratch wrote:Is he insane? I have a hard time seeing how BYU admin--and Church leadership, for that matter--is going to tolerate insinuations like this. The Mopologists can say what they like about John Dehlin, Joanna Brooks, et al., but as far as I know, even they don't label Church leaders "enemies."

He has crossed into delusional territory, I hope he is lining up new jobs, he may need one soon.

Ironically, when it comes to actual religious beliefs, Dr. Peterson's beliefs are much closer to those of the GAs than are those of Dehlin, Brooks, and (probably) the new crew at the Mormon Review. But, Dr. Peterson may find out to his chagrin that personal loyalty is valued much more highly to the GAs than is doctrinal loyalty.

Doctor Scratch wrote:Now that FARMS has been dismantled, there is no "official" Church arm for carrying out this kind of behavior. For that, at least, we can rejoice: no more officially-sanctioned attacks on TR-carrying TBMs; no more "official" smear campaigns; no more "official" hit pieces.

I rejoice with you.

I also share your dismay that Dr. Peterson depicts a kind of Manichaean cosmic vision in his description of his relationship with BYU colleagues. My guess is that even those who disagree with Daniel on certain points regarding apologetics are fond of him, respect much that he does, and look forward to working with him in the future. It does not bode well that he chooses to hold a grudge against those who made the administrative decisions that have started to take the Maxwell Institute in a new direction. I share what I can only imagine would be their sadness and disappointment, as well as a hope that he may come to put this behind him, forgive those he feels slighted him, and reconcile. I doubt anyone wants to open fresh wounds or maintain an adversarial posture towards him. Onward and upward, I say.

Mr. Peterson said:

It’s time to go home, but I’m not looking forward to it. I’ve discovered many new friends, and discovered the deep loyalty of some I had already known as friends, but I’ve also recognized a few previously unsuspected enemies, and that’s been profoundly disheartening.

Such, I guess, is life. Ever since the Fall.

Wow. Talk about a Jesus Christ complex coupled with a bit of overblown paranoia. That last bit about the Fall really takes the cake. I guess I should've added that to the original post:

From the limited reading I've done, it would appear that Dr. Peterson has surrounded himself with people who share this apocalyptic vision of their apologetic work. These guys seem to believe they are in a death match over the spirits of men. When cooler heads ought to prevail, Peterson's friends are probably egging him on.

This was a great OP. Thanks. I was ill prepared and naïve when I started posting at MAD. What a huge disappointment.
