By this I mean to say that I cannot consciously decide to believe in Mormonism. At least ideally speaking I like to think my beliefs are based on the available evidence or really I aspire to have my beliefs based in evidence.

Good question. I have noticed that religion and many of it's adherents focus more on faith in God's existence instead of faith in God. I suppose since they don't really know the girl they can't really have faith in God.
