Threads vanishing without indication of moderater's action

Post by _Chap »

In the past, when a moderator has moved a thread to another forum (typically from Terrestrial to Telestial), the moderator has left the thread title in place in the original forum but with the label "MOVED", and a link leading to the other forum.

A little while ago, Droopy posted a thread about Thanksgiving and ... yes, you guessed ... socialism and its evils. A little discussion took place, and the thread then vanished without apparent warning or sign that it ever existed. Apparently it went to the Off-topic forum. That is probably where it belonged, but that is not my point here.

Please could we revert to the previous usual practice of leaving a 'MOVED' label in place when a thread is moved? Otherwise the impression given is slightly sinister. Moderatorial action should always be up-front, it seems to me.

Edited to add: Damn. Typo in title of thread: "moderater" -> "moderator"

Hi Chap,

Mods have the option to leave a shadow topic in place when a thread is moved or not. That's left up to the discretion of the mod. The rule of thumb is that if it is a thread that has had a recent ongoing conversation, I'll leave a shadow topic. If it's just one post or something similar, I'll flat move it. Finally, if something has to be moved to telestial, we're more likely not to shadow topic it because the idea is to kill that link on this subforum per people's content expectations.

Well, the Droopy OP gathered eight posts including two from me and the others from pretty regular posters, one of whom (Bob Loblaw) made a relevant Mormon link with a reference to the United Order. I think that made the case for a shadow topic under the criterion you mention above. (But I agree the OP was out of line in Terrestrial, since it was wholly political and had no explicit Mormon relevance.)

But I do appreciate that mods must have their discretion to judge each situation on its merits, and gratitude for moderators volunteering should mean that they don't get called out over every judgement call they make.

It could simply be a newbie error. It used to simply auto fill on "moved". Has that changed?
