When Mormons meet someone who has left

In the past when Mormons are meet someone who left the Church they seem to become a bit defensive and adversarial. They almost always ask the question, do you believe in the devil? That is such an odd question. Does anyone know what prompts that question? Is it from something they were taught?

I could see this question coming from some of the sheltered Mormon bubble missionaries. The 18 year olds who really believe a little too much. Whose parents never taught them the difference between real truth and church truth. Which makes them very socially awkward.

That question is a bit ambiguous though, isn't it?

I mean, shouldn't active believing Mormons believe in the devil? Isn't it still taught that Satan is Jesus' brother?

Now, if they ask if the ex-mo worships the devil, that's something else.

I've never had the question posed in terms of devil worship, only whether one believed in the devil. When the response no was given, they never pursued the question further.

Mormon acquaintances are conditional upon you attending Church, or there being a chance of you attending Church. The only thing they’re really asking is “how can I get you back to Church so I feel better about my choice to attend?”
