Why do we see such lower rates of Latter-day Saint abuse? There are many potential reasons for this, which I’ve reviewed here in a separate piece. But I have one main theory: It’s the system of callings in the Church of Jesus Christ. In other organizations, if you want access to children, you can volunteer and be given it very quickly. In our system, you have to wait until you’re called. And this has a throttling effect creating lower rates of abuse.

Outstandingly stupid. Premise: God is perfect. If God is behind "calling" the adults in the LDS world to interact with children, there would be NONE of the abuse that there is. Not just lower. NONE.

For years, British members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been pushing church leaders for more effective standards to prevent sexual abuse.

On Saturday, many of their requests will become church policy throughout the United Kingdom.

“This is a win for activism,” said Douglas Stilgoe, a U.K. Latter-day Saint who runs the “Nemo the Mormon” podcast. “This is a win for engaged members saying, ‘No, something’s not right. We need to change it.’”

As you’ll read in the article, this is not a faith-promoting tale of prophetic revelation. It’s a sorry tale about change only coming about through fed-up and frustrated member ls taking matters into their own hands, activism, and publicising the Church’s shortcomings.

The Church does not prioritise the safety of children. Members should be thankful that some outspoken members do. Change comes about by activism, not by revelation.
