It's painfully obvious that this new medical school is either Nelson's pet project or the brainchild of one of his lackeys trying to curry favor.

It is not clear what "areas of strategic importance to the church" entails. Newsweek has contacted Brigham Young University for comment.

“Strategic importance” they don’t even talk like a church anymore. I guess the school will focus on teaching Priestjood Blessings, because if they don’t what does that say about the Brethren’s belief in the strategic importance of such an effective healing technique?

It is not clear yet if BYU will ask for taxpayer funding. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' investment arm, Ensign Peak Advisors, had stock holdings worth $54.7 billion as of late March in its publicly reported portfolio.

A new medical school? My only reaction is ok sounds nice. I am puzzled by the eagerness to find fault with the idea. I am sure there are millions of Mormons who appreciate scientific medical research and treatment. Of course the phrase strategic importance is vague but I am sure that priesthood blessings are taught clearly in the wards all around the world. There would be no need for a special school for that.

A new medical school? My only reaction is ok sounds nice. I am puzzled by the eagerness to find fault with the idea. I am sure there are millions of Mormons who appreciate scientific medical research and treatment. Well, let’s see where the project ends up and what kind of medical school is produced. The Church is being very vague about the details. That’s usually a sign that they know the details aren’t faith promoting.
