Return and report - extrapolating active member numbers

Post by drumdude »

Some interesting data here:

The average ward size based on member reports is between 100-200 members. The church reports around 25,000 wards. That gives an estimate for the number of active members at between 2-5 million.

Quite a small number for the Lord’s one true church.

It looks like the Church excels at producing inactive and ex-Mormons. At some point, I hope the Church leadership shows some introspection and tries to understand what they are doing wrong.

Not that long ago a European Area Presidency report was leaked online. Amongst the reports that were leaked was one on membership statistics, including sacrament meeting attendance. That report calculated average activity in Europe at 20% of total membership. I don’t think the needle has shifted since then.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Perhaps the Interpreter will run this past their own apologetic numbers people and bump that up to 20-50 million members or more.
