"Egregiously Misleading Historical Fiction"?

It has been very well received by the vast majority of critics and viewers. I think Mormons feel some sort of bizarre moral obligation to feel persecuted by it. It’s a good show.

I was watching a YouTube video https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou ... EXIYpwotv where two believers try to explain why the Pew study found Mormonism to be the most disliked religion. One topic was the persecution complex. Their theory was centered around the elitist appearance of the one and only true church claim and other Christian sects. Their solution? Our doctrine won't change. In other words , suck it world we are the real deal.

I don’t think the problem lies with Mormons espousing the doctrine that they believe that are the one and only true religion. It’s that they are dishonest about that doctrine when trying ti curry favour with other religious groups. When was the last time a Church Leader expressed that doctrine confidently? Did Nelson teach it to the Pope when he got five minutes with him? Do the Apostles articulate that when joining in with religious forums and gatherings? Of course not. Because they know that such expressions would ostracise them from the wider group. They want to run with the Hare and the Hounds (to use an English phrase to articulate the point). The Apostles speak out of both sides of their mouth. What happened to standing for something and being bold in declaring your beliefs? Is that yet another thing the Apostles tell members to do but which they themselves avoid doing at all costs?

I liked the story at the center, the mother and son who hire the mountain man to guide them and then a native American girl joins them. I liked the Jim Bridger character better than the Brigham Young one. I also found the persistence of the scalped Mormon man trying to recover his wife, and her dealings with the Shoshone, quite interesting. I guess on the whole, I preferred the fictionalized elements. But for me, I could not have enjoyed the 1998 movie Titanic but for the fictional 'Jack and Rose' story planted in it.

But, for a western miniseries, it is hard to top Godless. But American Primeval is, in my estimation, a good tier 2 contender.

It could have been a lot better. Yes, the Jim Bridger character was great. For me, perhaps the real gem to be found in the mess of it all. And, I don't really care that everything with Brigham wasn't historically accurate. I do believe, at the same time, that the film did capture a side of his personality--the shrewd, cunning, and calculating side of him. The series presented, however, a very lopsided portrayal of the Mormons.

Thanks for the recommendation of Godless. I was completely unaware of it. I found American Primeval to be B- popcorn fare that came close to self-parody too often for my taste, but I still thought it was entertaining. And yes, I do find some crap movies entertaining, but they are still crap.
