Questions, I can certainly see how you can see these implications in the comments. Curious I read through the link and there was no mention of capitol punishment. There was no mention of firing squad or other methods in Utah law.

Perhaps the speaker was more interested in people's stability in troubled times. Perhaps directly addressing capitol punishment was a step too far now, ever?

Some people might claim that God has said that. But from what I can see His last word on the matter seems to be “Thou shall not kill”.

I think the Church has cooled its jets on the death penalty, now that the spilling of blood has been taken off the table. Now you will no longer have squadrons of bishops vying to be included on the execution squad and hoping to be the one to receive the working bullet.

I am not even sure the Department of Corrections would recognize the right of LDS bishops to be chosen for the executioner's role. Utah has drastically changed since the execution of Gary Gilmore.

Not living in Utah I was not up on current state rules so checked Google. It was reported that the firing squad is still possible if requested before a specific date or material for lethal injection not available timely. Capitol punishment is a current possibility.

I have not heard of bishops participating. (1860s or 70s?)

Has there been any step back from the announced intention to seek the death penalty? Perhaps there will be as emotions cool.

With a bit of embarrassment I realize I had not noticed the difference so can thank you Chap for an interesting clarification. ( I like quite a few Americans made it through school without learning Latin)
