I just couldn't help it. The ignorance was just too thick over there regarding this issue. I knew my comments would be deleted within minutes. But there were about a dozen people lurking at the time, so maybe a handful saw my posts and learned something before the mods jumped in to maintain their ignorance.

As I have said before, your writing style (obtuse and inflammatory) leaves a lot to be desired as well as your civility. There is no way you can go toe to toe with a true academician, or be influential. If you wrote a little more concisely, with a little less cut-and-pasty one-upmanship, and with fewer insults (let's see, just about everybody with whom you disagree is either an "idiot" or "moron"), you might per a little more persuasive.

Is Ed Ashment still selling insurance? I knew him at the University of Chicago. In any event, Gee's writings seem more compelling to me. At least Gee had a dissertation to defend, successfully.

As long as you are the faith's most strident opponent on the issue of the Book of Abraham, the faith has little to fear.

Yes, CKS is fighting valiantly (and kicking Peterson's arse, in my opinion), but like you, Who Knows, I don't know how he does it. I'm just glad he does. :)

In saying “Abraham depicted” this sacrifice in the Facsimile, you seem to be saying this accurately illustrates the manner in which Abraham was understood to have been sacrificed.

But the tradition depicts Abraham being burned by fire, not stabbed with a knife. Your failure to indicate this dramatic difference leads readers to believe the evidence for a connection is much stronger than it really is. Not only that, but the sacrifice tradition was common knowledge to anyone who wanted to read about it in the 19th century. For example:

“this tradition of the Jews says Abraham was cast in the fire for refusing to worship idols, and out of which he was delivered” (Matthew Henry, An Exposition of the Old and New Testaments London, 1811, on Daniel 3:6. )

“If we may credit the tradition ... Abraham was cast into such a fire by this idolatrous people, because he would not worship their idols” (Adam Clarke, The Holy Bible Commentary and Critical Notes, New York, 1832, on Daniel 3:6).

You seem to be saying also that, by implication, it's unlikely Joseph Smith copied from these sources. I can handle that.
