An excerpt from the article:

"Jay Welch, who became choir director in 1974, was expected to lead the choir for decades, but lasted barely a year.
Welch was "one of the most gifted and popular conductors the choir has ever had, and his sudden and unexpected resignation brought a number of administrative problems to the surface," Roger L. Miller writes in the Utah History Encyclopedia. "Though regarded as a tragedy at the time, this resulted in many important changes which have worked to the advantage of the present organization, including placing the choir under the direct supervision of the First Presidency of the church."

I was around back when this happened, and sang with Jay in his (new) choir for a few years before heading off to school. Of course this was a long time ago, but I would guess the process might be the same -- not a lot of public announcement about the facts of the issue. It was political. We all know that now.

I have no insider information about the Jessop situation. I suspect it will come out soon. I have friends in the motab today, so I'll chat with them and report back.

Good luck to Craig, whatever his reasons -- he is a very talented man!

This statement is making the rounds:
Members of the Temple Square Orchestra have been advised that Jessop resigned rather than bow to demands that he name names of members who he thought may either be gay or harbor dissent towards church policies. Being a professional and loyal to his musicians, Jessop chose to resign. This is a sad day for the church and perhaps the beginning of the Monson Inquisition Era. Bravo to Maestro Jessop for his moral courage. We need more people like him. Shame on the Church for engaging in good old fashioned witch hunting.

Interesting. Well...I know Mack Wilberg, and he won't cave to that kind of crap, either.

So is Monson really trying to root out gay people and have them removed from the church?

Yeesh....are gays the new Communists? Are they going to start holding a Committee on Unheterosexual behaviors at the Mormon Manland Compensation Superdome (or whatever that monstrous new Meeting building is called.)? Will we soon be hearing questions such as "Are you now or have you ever been a member of a homosexual party?"

After Jessop's Tuesday night announcement, LDS officials named associate director Mack Wilberg as the choir's interim director. By Wednesday morning, they had removed Jessop's biography from the choir's web site.
You dedicate 27 years of your life to building something where others label you as "brilliant" and your legacy vanishes in less than a day of your departure.

It's as if he never existed.

What do you think of that?

Orwell in the "1984" has defined that. Jessop became a nonperson.
In Soviet Union, during stalinist era, they retouched the photos about people who became unworthy to appear together with the leaders.

Wow! Where did this quote come from?

As I understand it, it comes from a sibling_not sure which sex_of a member of the orchestra. It seems there is a group of <<dissenters>> in the orchestra as well as some suspected homosexuals. I guess the word has come down from above that it is time to <<clean house>> and apparently Jessop was not willing to stand by and watch it happen.

I would venture to say that we have not heard the last of this story. In fact, I would wager that it will get a whole lot uglier. They will not be able to <<keep the lid on>> a story like this. Give it a few more days and we should know a whole lot more.
