Tal Bachman wrote:On the first page of this website are the words "because we all want the truth". I have a lot of respect for Dr. Shades, but on this point, he sounds very naïve.

I didn't write that.

The introductory message:

Mormon Discussions. . . Because we all want the truth.

Here is a place of free discussion. Whether you want to discuss the finer intricacies of doctrine, or whether you want to discuss the truthiness of the church in general, your word will be heard here.

Pro, anti, investigator, questioner, critic, apologetic, no matter what you call yourself, what you have to say, or what your agenda is, you have a place here. We pride ourselves on a minimalistic moderation policy, so that your voice is always heard.

. . . was written by Keene, the chief site administrator, not me.

Either way, Tal, keep in mind that in spite of how you were greeted, you are just as welcome here as is anyone else.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

I took it as just a conventional catch phrase.

Beyond that it might have some ironic relevance in a place where some of posters operate from the assumption that they already possess The Truth (obtained via a-rational means) and need to correct or battle truth-less adversaries. This makes actual "discussion" pretty impossible: there can be no further investigation of topics from the position that you already know everything and everybody else will sadly learn the truth after they die.

Maybe the tag line should read:

"Because we all want (what we believe) is truth,"

or,

"Because we all (think we) want truth,"

or,

"Because we all want truth (to be what we believe)."

Nah, I think the current wording while it may not totally, completely, perfectly reflect reality, does give us a sense of the purpose of the board.

You here conflate ginosko with epithumeo and then conveniently conflate your amalgamation with "what LDS really want."

As if what LDS folks really desire is false, untrue knowledge, rather than the unvarnished truth.

This is, prima facie , an absurd argument.

Hey Celestial Kingdom Salmon -

Did you read my post? I didn't specify that Mormons are unique in often not wanting the truth. Methinks you protest a bit too much...

Well, yes...it does sound very charitable, that phrase. And it's tidy. It's pretty cumbersome to write "because most of us often don't really want to hear particular truths since it makes us feel bad, but just in case any of us DO want the truth and we can handle it, we've got this site". It was just, you know, an observation.

And yes, Dr. Shades, I heard you say that was written by Keene.

Hey, Tal---

CKSalmon isn't LDS. In fact, he is a critic who has frequently been attacked, ad hominem, by the likes of DCP and Bill Hamblin.

I'm just curious Bestie. Since you now live on the belief system of atheism, how bad would your life have to get before you would decide you would be better off dead.

I think in questions of Mormon history, doctrine, what was said or done most people on this board want to know the truth. The Mormon religion is only interested in faith promoting truths.

I for one am thankful for this site because I do want to know the truth. However I deal with I deal with it, but it's always interesting to know.

Well, actually, I live on my salary. I do wish I could live on my "belief system" of atheism, but alas, I can't find the "belief system" attached to atheism. Does anyone have an extra atheist "belief system" laying around?

Kidding aside, I suspect that you'd have to experience most conditions to determine whether or not you'd be better off dead. If I had to be hooked up to various machines and lay on my back all day, blind and deaf, I'm pretty certain I'd opt for death. Other than that, who knows.
