Hey Bishopric... (edited because I got two of my favorite posters mixed up!) ;-)
Well, I think you hit the crux of the problem in Mormonism.
No one seems to be able to tell when they are or are not receiving inspiration from, or under the influence of, the HG, including the leaders of the LDS church.
The scriptures are clear... whether by my own voice or the voice of my prophets, it is the same.
Yet, no one seems to be able to tell when a leader is speaking as a prophet or just sharing his opinion, including the prophet or leader who is speaking as a mouthpiece for God.
The prophets and apostles and leaders of the church clearly are misled (at times), when they believe they are under the inspiration of the HG. And faithful members (at times), clearly receive a witness to those things that are not true.
So, it seems no one can really tell when they are or are not receiving inspiration/revelation/guidance from the HG, even when they clearly believe they can.
Secondly, what is up with the doctrine vs teaching thing? ;-)
Doctrine is what is canonized in scripture (approved by vote by the members of the church). OK. But are teachings that are not officially canonized assumed to be not true? And sometimes canonized scripture/doctrine can be not true as well.
And because a teaching, taught by a prophet of God in an official capacity as a mouthpiece for Jesus Christ Himself, is not officially canonized as doctrine, is it not inspired? What is one to believe? The HG is so unreliable that it cannot be trusted at all.
At this point, I have come to realize that because something is doctrine in the LDS church, it does not mean it is true. It means more like, something that is taught and accepted at a particular time. It can be changed, altered, revised, dismissed, ignored, removed or reinterpreted at any time.
And, teachings may or may not be true regardless of who is teaching them, and regardless of if the prophet or leader believes they are true or not, or believes he is inspired or not.
Which leads us to the problem... why bother with a prophet at all?
And what an odd system for the God of the entire universe to come up with to bring forth his truth upon the earth!
The LDS church in my opinion, gives the impression that other churches teach the philosophies of man, mingled with scripture, and yet the LDS church is be led by Christ and teaches truth. Yet, I know of no religion that is filled with more teachings of man (opinion) mingled with scripture than the LDS church.

I think you meant me...but I'll just say brilliant minds think alike! (smile)

Yes, like most things Mormon, the very judgment that is made about others is usually a projection of themselves.

No, they're just really close to the camera.
Oh? Well, lemme restate: Those sure LOOK like some BIG crickets fighting with each other! Yet, obviously it just appears they're large because the camera was in close proximity.
You ruined my fun!
