Then why is it that the Holy Ghost always confirms the truth of whatever the prophet says, even when he's wrong?

It doesn't. Other times the HG is more selective and may tell you that this or that counsel should be adapted in a certain way to make it more effective for you.

Back in the mid- to late-1800s, How did the Holy Ghost counsel the members to adapt the Adam-God doctrine and make it more effective for them?
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Apparently the Holy Ghost didn't.

Joseph Smith speaking as a prophet:

An angel with a flaming sword said I must marry thine daughter, or the Lord shall smite us all down!!

Joseph Smith speaking as a prophet:

(post-coitus) A baby, all that angel talk... Well... That's just pillow talk, baby.

See? Notice the difference? It's all related to testosterone build-up. Prophet pre-release. Man post-release.

Pfft. Mystery solved.

"He was speaking as a man, not a prophet"

This is one thing that both apologists and critics can agree on. I'm actually surprised that apologists have conceded this point.

Bro Brigham: Adam-God...blah, blah, blah,..Thus Saith the Lord...blah, blah, blah.
Bro Larsen: With all due respect sir, I haven't received a confirmation from the Holy Ghost.

This is probably the healthiest alternative for those outside the gospel. For those inside who are trying to bring their life into harmony with God's teachings, not so much. Without the whole Holy Ghost thing, you're probably not going to get far.
