A masochist at play

Post by _Trevor »

Last night I went through the entire set of videos. The point of these videos is to refute the common belief that there is no archaeological or historical evidence in favor of the antiquity of the Book of Mormon. Kerry did raise some interesting points--things that make you go hmmm. Yet I found myself thinking, during almost every episode, is this something that could have just as easily come from a thorough knowledge of the Bible? For a couple of items, this is not the case--Alma being the one that jumps out at me. But for much of it I was left wondering whether the "evidence" provided gave us a direct link with antiquity, or a link to an ancient, but readily available source (in the 19th century)--the Bible.

Hi Trevor,

Could you be more specific about what it is in Alma to which you refer?

:-)

Ohhh also, have to add my voice to those who claim Kerry is a nice guy. He is. When I first discovered LDS related MBs, and asked questions about my concerns, Kerry was one of the few who was kind and understanding. Unlike most apologists who go with the "you are stupid, lazy, faithless, etc, etc, etc, lets fight!" mantra, Kerry was most concerned and caring. Just saying... ;-)

Oh, the name Alma being a male Semitic name. I don't know a whole lot about it, but if it is true, it is at least a fortuitous coincidence. Sounds like something in the plus column for the ancient Book of Mormon (perhaps).

I agree. Kerry is alright with me.

Alma being a male semitic name for that time period has been known about for years.

He also likely thinks that Isaiah wrote the whole book of Isaiah - he needs to explain how Isaiah 48 got into the plates when it wasn't written until after Cyrus released the Jews to go back home - like 530ish BC. I think I will ask him to respond to that question on video.

Yes, it has, but don't expect most here to

1. Be so much as aware of the fact

2. Be aware of the relevant scholarship

3. Be intellectually honest enough to admit to it if they were.
