Having military patrols in the area does not constitute being at war. Brigham Young was getting ready for Armageddon, licking his dictatorial chops over the possibility of a direct threat to his little petty serfdom. If it werent for the Mormons behavior, the US would have likely left them the hell alone.

Or that they were a boil of evil on the backside of the U.S. that needed to be lanced?

Mormon groups were dangerous idealists that believed they were living how god wanted them to live. Part of that meant bullying and forcing violence upon those who would not bow to them in land deals, economic conflict and theological ideas.

Mormonism should have been destroyed by the US army after MMM and those who justify its existence now should take pause at just how violent and marginalized the culture in utah was in the late 19th century southwest.

The MMM was not an isolated incident. It was the culmination of continual actions by Mormons in order for them to enforce their feelings of superiority and persecution complex.
