What a dick.

I'm not sure what is more pathetic....that you continue to respond to these kind of threads in the manner that you do, or that you hold yourself up as a bishop and academic and yet stay involved in a gossipy listserve.

One would think you could rise above it, but I guess not. From your history I think you get off on it.

Chris <><
For the record, he is just a bishop over college kids. I highly doubt they would put him in an established ward.

To add insult to injury, his pithy little ward is the non BYU heathens of College Terrace Apartments, a.k.a. "The Party Place". It's almost as if he is being punished with this calling.

When I first heard about his calling to bishop I could not believe that such a crusty egotistical man could be called to this. Once I heard it was just the College Terrace ward I laughed out loud!

Look at his history...would you want your college daughter going through a "worthiness" interview with him?

No matter the question of Novak's sponsorship, SHIELDS (Scholarly[?] and Historical[?] Exchange for Latter-day Saints) is just embarrassing.

I'd suggest a name change: SCREED (Scholars' Corruption Recorded and Email Exchange Diaries).

Nobody here but me actually participates on Skinny-L, of course, but everybody here seems to have a very firm idea of exactly what is said on it.

Odd, that.

Feel free to share, Prof. P. The evidence we *do* have shows that you were passing around private email correspondence to the likes of Lou Midgley, Bill Hamblin, and Gary Novak. Tell me: Did Prof. Midgley boast about his verbal assault on Sandra Tanner via "skinny-l"?

Well, we can certainly have some idea about Skinny-L in action: email harassment, intramural gloating, the sharing of private emails among an apologetic cadre.

Right. I'm going to try to summarize for you, my very best friend, years and years of small talk on a little private list?

Good friends, all. And, yes, we talk.

Do you have any friends?

I've never known Professor Midgley to "boast."

I think there was some mention of the incident. It appears to loom larger in your demonology than in the minds of those on Skinny-L. I haven't seen mention of it for years.

Daniel Peterson to James White:

Mr. White:

Thank you for withdrawing from the exchange; I was worried that this was
going to cost me a lot of time.
Backed into a corner, eh? Beating an
ungraceful retreat?

I'm sorry you broke your arrogance meter. Was it a gift from your
mother?

I really don't understand why you feel the need to be so hostile.
Perhaps you should add a contact sport to your cycling, so that you can
work out your aggressions in a more socially acceptable manner. I have
always told people that you were relatively polite when we met on the
radio some years ago, and several have assured me that such polite and
unaggressive behavior must have been an aberration. I guess they were
right, and your reputation is not unearned.

Too bad. I have had respectful interchanges with several critics of my
faith. But you don't seem capable of such things. You have evidently
chosen the right career.

Daniel Peterson

This, from the Scholarly and Historical Exchange for Latter-day Saints folks.

Yes, this apparently really is LDS scholarship as observed in the wild.

What an unfunny joke it all is.

And Peterson was apparently proud of his condescending performance:

To James White:
Please post the exchange. I plan to do so.

There's nothing secretive about it. There are, I would guess, roughly ten or twelve people on the list. Maybe more. (Not everybody on the list participates actively, I'm guessing.)

But I'm not even slightly inclined to lift so much as a finger to try to satisfy your obsessive curiosity about such things, nor to help you compile your rather creepy "dossiers."

Not everything is meant to be a joke.

No, not proud. Just concerned that, if Mr. White was planning to post a truncated account of the exchange (as he has been known to do), people have a chance to see the entirety of it. And it would have been even better if people had known the entire history leading up to that particular encounter.

I'm not at all reluctant to admit that I've occasionally found Mr. White irritating. I'm not alone in that. (The extraordinarily mild-mannered Dr. Paul Owen, for example, though an evangelical Protestant himself, is anything but a fan of Mr. White's, as a search on the web will quickly show.)
