Not really,
Most athletic competitions are beyond boring, on top that none of them are live (in US). I'm glad Spain gave a good fight in basketball final.
It would suffice to say that they should leave out every lame competition except; Track &Field, Boxing, Wrestling, Swimming, Basketball and dozen others.
Leave the soccer to World Cup, Ping Pong and synchronized swimming alikes (there are dime a dozen) should definitely go to a separate (secondary) olympic organization.
And please introduce American Football into competition, we could loan college players to every nation in the manner of we do drafts. So the world can experience a real bloody, hard hitting competition.

The closing ceremonies are amazing. Do you not think that God would approve of a cross section of the world joining together in a spirit of celebration and appreciation for the human spirit? Your question seems somewhat provincial.
