Yeah, and when the Mormons leaders of the 19th Century were preaching the imminent 2nd Coming, what did that all amount to?
I'm not going to say that Packer's comments were stupid. Far from it - there are financial and economic challenges coming, and it's not that hard to see it. If the Q12 and FP were truly prophetic, they wouldn't be stating the obvious after the crap has already hit the fan - Packer would have been preaching this stuff 5 years ago. But that doesn't mean his advice - except, perhaps, paying tithing to the Mormon church - is bad. And even that may work out for people who come upon hard times and receive help from their bishop, help that someone who didn't pay their tithing might not receive.
The fact is that the church is made up of people, and to the extent that a group of people bands together to help each other out, pooling some resources and risks, that can be quite successful and quite helpful. None of this makes the church true, but the non-truth of the church also doesn't render its successes unreal. To the extent that the church succeeds in doing good for people, it is the result of the efforts of well-meaning people doing what they can to make it a helpful organization. The same could be said for a lot of other organizations too.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
