I'm sure this one is giving the brethren heartburn. Here the Lord intervened in countless football games in order to promote the church, and then the star QB turns around and passively supports the greatest sin of the modern age. My guess is that they'll overlook it as long as possible, for both the political reasons as well as the huge tithing checks they'd be missing out on by taking action.
Lou Midgley 08/20/2020: "...meat wad," and "cockroach" are pithy descriptions of human beings used by gemli? They were not fashioned by Professor Peterson.
LM 11/23/2018: one can explain away the soul of human beings...as...a Meat Unit, to use Professor Peterson's clever derogatory description of gemli's ideology.

The political fallout of hauling Steven and Barbara Young into an excommunication over a political issue would seriously compromise the church's credibility, even for such diehards as the members of my ward. I doubt they're even contemplating such an action. It could only backfire. (It's not like they could dig up an extramarital affair or a closet gayness for either of them). There's simply nothing there but two people choosing to exercise their own personal inspiration in a political arena.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a short chat with their SP though. Or a visit from the duly appointed sap recruited by the Committee.
Think Dr. Peterson might happen to stop in for a chat? It is my impression that the Church wants to grow rather than contract.

Is publicly supporting Prop 8 with yard signs, making public comments opssosing Prop 8, and giving large cash donations to oppose it grounds for discipline? What would happen if an average Joe Mormon did this? I agree the church will not go after the Youngs because there is no way to do it without attracting the media.

Just spotted on RfM:

This sounds like the work of a prissy rich trophy wife whos been gossiping with her friends and taken up her "cause of the month". Hopefully Steve will take control of his household and reign in his wife.

I don't think so. There would be fallout to be sure, but not catastrophically so. We would simply find out who is really LDS and who is not, not unlike what happened after the revelation of the Priesthood.
It's far more catastrophic to allow high profile apostates to thumb their noses at the Church without some sort of sanction. That is where the real loss of credibility occurs.
There's simply nothing there but two people choosing to exercise their own personal inspiration in a political arena.
Nor is there anything wrong with a Church determining who should and should not be associated with it by membership.

Are Steve and Barbara Young apostates now? This quote from BCSpace and comments left by LDS on the SFGate forum seem to indicate so. Why are LDS all of a sudden required to agree with the prophets on political issues? Were those who supported ERA in the 70s apostates? What about those who opposed the priesthood ban?

This issue and the other issues you raised are more than just political, they are doctrinal and critical doctrines at that.
There are varying degrees of apostasy. For example, I might be 1% apostate, 99% TBM. The question of course is when does it rise to the level excommunication and how do you measure it?
How do I measure such? I think of others who have been excommunicated (you might think of the "September 6") and by comparison, Steve Young, his wife, Harry Reid, and others should most certainly be exomunicated if the Church is going to remain consistent. This is where the loss of credibility is, small timers get ex'd, high profilers get a pass.
I hear Steve Young is the GD teacher in his Ward. So am I. Assuming I am just your everyday man on the street, how long do you think I would last as GD teacher if I publically supported gay marriage?

2% apostate?
