Last week at FHE the person giving the prayer balked at blessing the (very unhealthy) refreshments and instead said, "and please bless these refreshments that they will not make us too fat."
Cool. At least this person is putting some thought into it instead of resorting to the rote prayer phrases.
It reminds me of an occasion when I was a missionary. It was a freezing January night in humid Japan, and the four of us were standing around the kerosene (sekkyu) stove as Elder Lund said the evening prayer. The first thing he said, in his most sincere voice, was, "Thank you so much, Lord, for this sekkyu stove and the warmth it provides." We all giggled, but it really was what we were all the most grateful for at that moment, after a day out riding bicycles in the cold.
