Re: On this day in 1844
Joseph was murdered by a mob. It was barbaric and evil. And it would have been interesting what would have happened if he would have carried on. What would have happened to the LDS church with Joseph Smith at the helm. But we will never know because a mob killed him, a mob made up of intolerant men who had blood in their minds and then on their hands.
There is no excuse for what happened to Joseph Smith and his brother.

I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.

Exactly. No excuse. God will not be mocked.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

There is no excuse for taking other men's wives either, anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances, not even the "God commanded it" excuse.

Try again, Gaz. There are more than a few characteristics in common, and it's danged embarrassing.

Hello,
Here is Doctrine and Covenants Section Three, Verse Four:
Now, Here is History of the Church, Volume Six, Pages 408 and 409:
Here is Doctrine and Covenants Section Three, Verse Four:
4 For although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him.
Now, Here is History of the Church, Volume Six, Pages 408 and 409:
God is in the still small voice. In all these affidavits, indictments, it is all of the devil—all corruption. Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet. You know my daily walk and conversation. I am in the bosom of a virtuous and good people. How I do love to hear the wolves howl! When they can get rid of me, the devil will also go. For the last three years I have a record of all my acts and proceedings, for I have kept several good, faithful, and efficient clerks in constant employ: they have accompanied me everywhere, and carefully kept my history, and they have written down what I have done, where I have been, and what I have said; therefore my enemies cannot charge me with any day, time, or place, but what I have written testimony to prove my actions; and my enemies cannot prove anything against me. They have got wonderful things in the land of Ham. I think the grand jury have strained at a gnat and swallowed the camel.

Brack,
As a pre-existant spirit Joseph ranked alongside Adam and Abraham; He was one of the noble and great ones. His mission in this life was so important it was spoken of in hope and faith by the meridian apostles as the great tim eof the "restitution of all things" (Acts 3:21).
In regards to Jospeh the Lord stated:
4 Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;
5 For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.
Joseph was able to keep the kingdom together in the name of Christ through the great work that he did, the spiritual capacity he developed, and the witness that he bore of Jesus Christ. He was blessed in this effort through the numerous visitations of angels and the rstoration of numerous priesthood keys under their hand. He received instruction through the Holy Ghost and taught others to do the same, not receiving glory for himself alone, but teaching all who would listen to receive all that he had.

GAZ, thanks for your revelations. They confirm the power of indoctrination, my current fixation
Pasted below is mine from another site on the topic of Religion. I think it may have some relevance to the pretentious claims you make re Joseph Smith and LDSism. Few of them can be substantiated.
GAZ, there is little gained in reliving a glorified past, or in ardor of a nonexistant future in an imagined heaven. Such beliefs originated in a time of unfettered imagination and very little knowledge of life sciences. For what it's worth...

Good AM Judith, you said:
"Do you really believe that without religion the world would come to peace?I doubt it. There are always going to be those who are greedy, hateful, and evil, even if religion isn't around."
(RM) A good, and respected question. Well, has the world come to peace with religion? No... Why??? Because Religion has been ineffective in the real-life affairs of the world. Why???
Because Religion has been about another, non-real-life. An imagined life in another, imagined, world. Religion generally had to do with the unseen.
One could compare religious thinking to the thinking and imaginings of young children. Nothing wrong with that in childhood. However, when fact is given to imagined fiction, decisions can/might be made on false premises that can/might lead to misunderstanding reality, and shift dependence onto unsound misinformation--even when well intended.
The Religious Institution is THE oldest societal influence in our human era. As such it encases the wisdom of the ages. As well it has fostered belief in ignorance/knowledge-voids of those past ages. At the same time it instilled faith in unsubstantiated myths and urban-legends of those times, very often directed by superstitions and folk-magicians considered
Holy and led by Divine (imagined entity) guidance.
While the above illustrates the negative and undesireable reality of Religion in general: that which humanity would be better to eschew. The corollary of this reality is the
social support structure the community experiences via the gatherings opportuned by Religion's matrix.
Note my use of past tense in the beginning. This is to clarify my position re Religion. I don't think the world would necessarily be better without Religion perse.
However, religion (Mormonism) needs to rid itself of its untruths and fantasies to address current times without past prejudices.
When Church congregations become nondenominational; when Church buildings become Community Centres serving the whole community, 24-7; when Church leaders from top-down and bottom-up become non-indoctrinational; when Churches teach life skills for mortality--detached from speculations re immortality--devoid of guilt & fear, morality will
better be seen as fundemental to happiness and personal fulfillment, here on earth.
Then the immoralities of greed, hate and evil, as you suggest, will have less appeal to a fully, and truthfully, informed society. It is happening, but we're not there yet. Give it another 5 plus generations and the world will be a better place... As I see it... Why-not??
