I believe the main difference in the insults critics level here versus MAD is vocabulary. MADdites might not use the word "asshole", but instead will use words I listed above.

So if swear words are not involved, it's supposed to be less of an insult?

That is my impression as well.

The other thing is that MADites often say "who me?" when called on it. Like I said, give me the directness of a Merc or a PP or a Schmo any day.

Uh, yeah. The apologists often want to claim that they are all witty and fun-loving and whatnot, but "Scotty Dog" Lloyd totally explodes that myth. This individual is so grimly humorless that I imagine hanging out with him would be about as fun as diving into a swimming pool filled with razor blades. This is a guy who decries Jesus Christ: Superstar as the work of the Devil, and who thinks "Mello Yellow" is a rockin', hip song. I'm sure if he dared to get real wild and listen to something like, oh, I don't know... Hanson, his head would explode. Save yourself the trouble next time, Runtu, and have a conversation with a donut.

I don't really have anything against Scott, but as I said over there, it really is good once in a while to be reminded that a lot of apologists have a barely veiled disdain and contempt for us ex-Mormons. I popped back into MAD last week just in time for such a reminder.

I'm not claiming victimhood, let alone feigning it, sole or otherwise. As I said in my previous posts, there's plenty of contempt on both sides. I just prefer mine stated directly.

I called Scott Lloyd a "magical thinker" once, on MAD. I think I would have been better off just calling him an asshole. I agree with you, Runtu. I prefer the direct approach as well. But I can understand why others might not.
