bcspace, can you quantify how far removed I have to be from profiting from pornography before I can be a General Authority?

Will the Church not accept tithing generated from say, the sale of stock in Anheuser-Busch?

Let's ask an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ what we should do:

Dallin H. Oaks, "“Brother’s Keeper”", Ensign, Nov. 1986

Christian standards should also apply to those who earn a living by selling or advertising products in the marketplace........

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this same attitude of looking after the interests of others governed Latter-day Saints who are making a profit from the sale or promotion of alcoholic beverages? Consider the terrible effects of alcohol. Alcohol-related accidents are the leading cause of death of those under twenty-five. The physical, social, and financial effects of alcohol ruin marriages and family life. By dulling inhibitions, alcohol leads to untold numbers of crimes and moral transgressions. Alcohol is the number one addictive drug in our day.

The consumption of alcohol is increasing among youth. Targeting young audiences, advertisers portray beer and wine as joyful, socially desirable, and harmless. Producers are promoting new types of alcoholic beverages as competitors in the huge soft-drink market. Grocery and convenience stores and gas stations stock alcoholic beverages side by side with soda pop. Can Christians who are involved in this commerce be indifferent to the physical and moral effects of the alcohol from which they are making their profits?

Maybe another way to phrase your question would be, "Is there a limit at which the Church is not willing to trade its teachings for dollars?"

What was the error in correlation?

That the Church has anything to do with porn in connection with Marriott hotels.

Let's have a short recap of the extent to which the Church is in bed [no pun intended] with Marriott International:

--The head of Marriott International is a General Authority

--Marriott International operates a church-owned hotel in Hawaii

--The business school and the basketball arena at BYU are named after the Marriotts

Now, Marriott International has announced that it will stop offering pay-per-view whoredoms in its hotel rooms, but this is a recent development. Marriott has had a tradition of using pornography as a revenue stream as well as a history of being in bed, so to speak, with the Church.

So my question is still open. Do you actually have to be Bob Guccione before the Church will say you're not GA material or will not do business with you?

Official LDS Flip Flopping:

Pornography is Bad
Marriot tithing is good

Alcohol is bad
City Creek vendors selling alcohol is good

The eating of meat is bad except in times of famine or hunting
Using Missionaries to manage commercial hunting reserves is good

God was once a man
Oh no he wasn't
Oh yes he was
Oh...ehm, I don't know what I know...

The Church has an unpaid ministry
Ehm, not quite, some of us get paid

They have a stipend. None of them are living on a island somewhere nor do they have time to enjoy the riches you imagine them to have.

You really believe this don't you.
There really is no point in discussing stuff with you if you are this far into denial.

It's a fact born out in the transcript and by listening to the interview. He devoped his answer out loud (lots of people do this and yes, it's not conducive to media interviews) with an eye to not cast pearls. The answer he settled on is not the answer you try to portray.

Typical response from someone without nuance or complexity or most of all, knowledge.

.

"Is this the teaching of the church today, that God the Father was once a man like we are?"

"I don't know that we teach it. I don't know that we emphasize it. I haven't heard it discussed for a long time in public discourse. I don't know. I don't know all the circumstances under which that statement was made. I understand the philosophical background behind it. But I don't know a lot about it and I don't know that others know a lot about it." - Gordon B. Hinckley, Time Magazine, Aug 4, 1997

That's a lot of "I don't knows." Almost a complete 180 from Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith would have said "Hold on, let me ask God. Pay Lay Ale......hello?.......yeah.....OK.....Yep......OK, I'll tell him. According to God, he said if you ask me difficult questions like this again he will curse you with a sore cursing."
"We have taken up arms in defense of our liberty, our property, our wives, and our children; we are determined to preserve them, or die."

Which are divided among two concepts. So? He's coming at it knowing his audience doesn't have the background. We truly don't know much about what it's like to be a God or what happened on other worlds when God was once a mortal man. The bottom line is that you must feed your fantasy and you have to lie to do it.
