Why Does the LDS Church Invest in Space Travel?

I guess I will just have to use my imagination. I might use it as the basis for my next science fiction short story.

Finally, why would the Church be interested in improving space travel? What purpose could this have possibly served?

Isn't it obvious? The Church wishes to spread the Gospel to as many parsecs of space as possible. Those Catholics had the advantage of spreading their message on Earth due to not waiting for the restoration. We Mormons want to get an early head start this time.
