NOM is anything but stupid. A better word for it is "adventurous".

Forgive him.
Most religious people need religion to tell them the differences between good choices and bad.

Absolutely. Especially if your wife has influence over your children and could influence the religious path they take later in life.
Because everyone knows that when a man divorces his wife, she automatically and immediately loses all access to and influence over any children they had together.

Hey genius, you do realize that when you say things like this:

Furthermore, your entire argument can no longer be that anyone has a moral obligation to point out the evils of the church, nor to leave it. Any statements you make must be of the form, "I, malaise, think it is a moral obligation for me that...fill in whatever..., but that's only for me."
Basically, you have rendered your entire thread pointless.

I couldn't disagree more.
+1
At least Dawkins, in his book The God Delusion, partially acknowledges that an atheist should feel no qualms in feigning religious conversion or belief in such a situation when he discussed the story of Edgardo Mortara.
There is something of the Inquisition in your response, malaise. I stand firmly with Kish; poke me with the soft pillow if you will, I shan't recant.

I subscribe to many of the NOM tenants. I am what many call a cafeteria Mormon. I disagree with the OPer. I have a rather open mind so I would love to hear further reasoning for why NOM is bad.

malaise,
I take strong philosophical and moral exceptions to certain directions of and actions being taken by the United States Government. Am I under a moral obligation to not pay income taxes, to defund to my minute extent the ability of the U.S. Government to pursue those directions and objectives that I fing repugnant?

Maliase,
It's obvious that you really don't know much about NOM's...or at least the ones I know...nor do you have any idea how I balance the Church in my life.
Maliase wrote:It's much more serious than that. Because of the LDS church women are taught that they are inferior in a number of subtle ways, homosexuals are taught that they are evil, and people miss out on a number of enjoyable life experiences (like drinking) that could have improved that only life they are going to get. I think people are morally obligated to try to deconvert their family members from the LDS church or even mainstream Christianity.
I have two daughters; neither one of them feel inferior to anyone. They are both in college, work part-time with special needs kids, and are extremely self-assured young women.
My best friend is gay; he is a voice student of mine. He also taught drama to both my girls when they were in High School. My friend is welcome in our home at any time, and, we actually asked him to look in on my oldest daughter when she had to work, and my husband and I went on Spring Break to the beach. My friend happens to be very good with cars, and my daughter's car was acting up, so it was nice to have someone nearby who could help her in an emergency. So much for teaching my children that homosexuals are evil.
As far as drinking is concerned, with all of the drunk driving deaths and alcoholism that exists, I'm not really too uncomfortable raising my kids in a "dry" home. I do agree that it would be nice if the Church changed their view on moderation in this area, because I, personally, see nothing wrong with a nice wine and food pairing.
Like Kish and others have stated here, I think that everyone has to choose a path that best suits them, and best suits their own family's needs.
You seem very insensitive to those of us who have grown up in the Church, and have family and extended loved ones who are very much a part of the Mormon culture. I would be curious as to your background concerning the Church, and whether or not you have ever had to face this type of situation.

Re: New Order Mormonism is so freaking stupid
My big bro is gay, I do not raise my kids to see him as wrong. He is fully supported by my wife and I. Hell, I announced to my wife and kids the other day that I would be gay if I could. I wish I could have a bromance. I love the idea of having someone over that I can play xbox with, watch games, and eat calorie filled food.
In addition, there is not a male in my household, myself and son, that believe males are smarter than females. Moreover, my wife has complete control over me. I have not had an opinion since I was married. I love life this way.
Anyways, this Maliase person really seems to lack any understanding regarding NOMs.
