today? Yes. 30 years ago? Probably not.

Is there anything from LDS leadership concurring with this change in attitude? In your OP you find the 11 year old article to be patronizing, what is there out there to lead one to believe there has really been any change?

Hello,

I think it was Socrates that said something to the effect, "Once a woman is made equal to a man she becomes his superior."

There's a lot of truth in that, however as with anything else generalized statements can't adequately address nuance. I have a former partner that clearly outperformed me in almost every possible way. To this day I'm impressed with her various achievements, drive, and energy. Is that her femininity? Does that trait make her motivated & intelligent? I don't think so. It's akin to claiming masculinity is responsible for greatness.

What I don't like from the OP's quote is where it's suggested a woman should use her woman-ness as an asset to "serve others". I'm probably reading too much into it, but the impression I get is the Mormon church would prefer servile women rather than women achieving greatness outside the home.

Didn't I hear a Disney song about femininity?

I have never seen anything from any member of the 12 that contradicts what you said, or even that women have innate qualities that are necessary in the public sphere (socially, economically, politically) to form a better society, nothing that sees anything of worth in women beyond their capacity as "mothers". That's probably a result of the LDS focus on marriage as the ultimate in human accomplishment.

If anyone has anything from LDS leadership that shows otherwise I'd like to see it.

café,
I have yet to see ideas coming like JPII's coming out of the Mormon leadership but that doesn't mean it hasn't been said. Has anyone seen this? I predict it is on it's way...

But still, more gender equality in Mormonism is a can of worms. It will be a challenge but that doesn't mean it's impossible!
