No matter where I've lived or been, I get a distinct impression that Mormons are people no matter where they live and, extraordinarily, they are not unlike most of those non-LDS who they live around. I've heard the complaining about Utah Mormons from LDS outside of Utah. I've seen the attitude among some Utah Mormons (special and privileged) that I dislike had among many outside of Utah, particularly when in areas where LDS are sparse and they assume this very heavy "peculiar people among the heathens" attitude. I think its all a way overplayed distinction.

I was taught "born-in-church" LDS were the most chosen and righteous spirits from the pre-earth-life, held to the last days to come to Earth. Plus, Mormon's have the whole truth and a leader that talks directly to god. They also have the gift of the Holy Ghost for constant guidance unlike regular people who get the influence of the spirit "just sometimes". A peculiar people. They shouldn't be just like other people.

Its not a matter of what they should be or not, but what they are. Mormons are failures just like everyone else.

Yeah, someone did a number on me. It was called Mormonism. And the people my age were taught those ideas repeatedly; as were many others. Don't try to pretend it was an anomaly.

I heard "You are the chosen ones" very often growing up. I was lucky enough to be born in the mo'corridor. I just happened to have the right religion from birth. Yeah, I got that.

I don't know if I dare say it, but I will. because those Mormons, as we call them, aren't living up to their covenants, in Mormon speak, generally.

I'm not pretending nothing. I know what folks said. I'm just saying people in the church said things, the Church taught things, via manuals and conferences, but to accept the idea that you were somehow more or better than others because you were born LDS is just silly. I mean I don't hold it against ya, but I admit I just didn't buy into that bit. I've often lamented that people in the Church feel justified if ever they feel like they are better than others.

Of course it wasn't an anomaly. We were taught that repeatedly. My kids came back from EFY last year telling me the same thing, insisting they were a more righteous and reserved generation than mine was. I mentioned to them that I had been told the same thing, and they were a bit disappointed.

Growing up feeling like one of the chosen can indeed do a number on people. My mother was convinced that I survived a serious birth defect because of some special mission I was to serve for Heavenly Father. That was a big burden for me to bear growing up.
