Re: Smack down from On High.... take that Bcspace
Since there are more members of the church residing outside the US than within, it seems a little provincial to limit the political test for LDS orthodoxy to the current American parties.
Perhaps BCSpace could give us a rundown of the political party (or parties) in each of the major countries of the world that would endorsed by his Lord and Savior (or at least those that would allow one to be a "good Mormon.")
For example, I wonder if the church would condone being a citizen of Norway at all, seeing as how their most conservative political parties would likely fall well to the left of what passes for liberalism in US politics.

Creating tax shelters for the wealthy which the poor cannot enjoy has LDS doctrine written all over it? It's wrong to use compulsion on finances, but okay when it comes to drugs, or prostitution?

a citizen of Norway ??? I don't care, norwegians are living far away...
I think about:
- a citizen of Hungary (MY COUNTRY, and we are a minor country)
- a citizen of Austria/Österreich (neighbour country)
- a citizen of Slovakia (neighbour country)
- a citizen of Romania (neighbour country)
- a citizen of anyeuropeancountryyoumormonsknownothingabout
I am not anti-american, even I should be one, because YOU have left us in the deepest crap in 1956. OK, the word ŝĥĩť was moderated out (***). The events and consequences of 1956 wasn't moderated. And this is history.

What LDS doctrine would this be in conflict with?
It's wrong to use compulsion on finances, but okay when it comes to drugs, or prostitution?
Please be more specific.

When did I ever claim the Lord endorsed a particular political party? Do you feel that if a political party is not in conflict with the LDS Church, the Lord endorses it? I think the only one can say is that the Lord does not approve of certain political parties when their entire philosophy is in opposition.
For example, I wonder if the church would condone being a citizen of Norway at all, seeing as how their most conservative political parties would likely fall well to the left of what passes for liberalism in US politics.
I think if one used the US as a measure, the Lord would not approve of many paries in other countries considered conservative. But if you are faced with the lesser of two evils, I don't think the Lord would necessarily hold it against you personally.
Outside the Church venue, I freely state that a Democrat cannot be a good Mormon.
Hugh Nibley.
Not a good Mormon.
Got it.
Being aware of some of his views, quite likely. But it was not too long age that one could find true conservatives in the Democratic Party. I'd say that number has shrunk to the point where they no longer can influence the party and therefore, even if they disagree with most of it, to be a member of is to lend support to it ala the Romans 1:32 principle. There is no longer any good or compelling reason for a conservative or a good Mormon to be a US Democrat.
There is nothing in the Republican platform or most other conservative parties that is contrary to LDS doctrine. Once you go liberal or left wing, you're not in LDS territory anymore. That's correct, as long as you skip the New Testament (not a problem for many Mormons like you)
The New Testament and all LDS scripture is bread and butter for any true conservative.

Yes, we did not act appropriately to help you during those times. We had the means and unto whom much is given, much is required (from the New Testament by the way). It was contrary to LDS doctrinal and scriptural principles not to lead the world in war against the Soviet Union to aid you and overthrow it.

That is clearly a statement criticizing the Brethren for their non-action.
