um... it will get better.

In terms of getting better do you mean in the sense of a fantastic city such as NYC, Boston, etc or do you mean some garbage dump like Oklahoma City or some other ignorant baptist/non-denom/young earth southern mess place? I guess it is all relative but as long as Utah keeps out the southern trash then I am sure it can only improve.

I really hope the first.

Raw growth is not going to be the determining factor, IMHO, but rather net growth (inclusive of retention) as measured against net growth in the general Utah population.

Perhaps someone has the data, but it would seem that, as a percentage of the state population, the number of active Mormons is in decline.

Without having done any research myself I'd say your guesstimate is probably pretty close.

I hope not. That was a pathetic sounding rant if you ask me. My mom's from the south and moved to Utah, thereby making Utah a better place than it was previously.

Its closer to the 3 million said, but not there yet, it seems. The latest census estimates is 2.83 million.

I love these types of predictions though. So the Church is going to plain disappear? Be wiped off the face of the earth? Interesting take.

Sure enough! I was looking at the 2000 Census instead of the 2010.

LDS is here to stay, folks. Maybe it will disappear after 300 or 400 years but not before then. Lot's of people need religion.

So I caught that because I'm such a nerd. When I was a young fella growing up on the mean streets of North Ogden, utah 84414 I spent many an hours memorizing population distribution. Back then, I knew, based on the 1980 census, the population of each of the 50 states to the nearest 100,000. I knew their rank from most populace to least and from largest in land area to smallest. Soon, i knew the 100 most populace cities, city proper, in order too. And I knew the largest cities ranked to about 25. My interest grew to knowing the population of every country to the nearest million (and ballparked those less than amillion), in the whole damn world. I also knew the largest cities, which gets pretty tricky. At about 10 years old I was out there throwing out numbers and naming places none of the grown ups knew about. When the 1990 census came out it all started over again.

I wonder if you are my cousin. You sound just like him. Did you also happen to build model cities out of paper and masking tape? If so, PM me and we will have a laugh about how my very own cuz is debating with me on the Internet! LOL.

Wow. I bet you were popular at parties.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I believe you are quickly discounting the many more being born to active LDS families. Currently, there are more Mormons than ever before.
And even then, Utah is less of an LDS state. What does that tell you?

Any ward I have attended in the past 5 years is always at least full if not overfilled. Add to the fact that if two LDS parents have 5 kids which is typical and 3 of the five stay then it is still relatively strong growth. So if 1 million Utahns are active or semi-active Mormons you can expect 500,000 more actives each generation on the low end of the spectrum on top of the baseline one million.

As far as population growth in Utah goes, it is rapid but only in the sense of percentages. The population is already terribly small. There are more people in the pgh metro area than the whole state of Utah. Utah has a very insignificant population. So outsiders moving in appears to not be a notable issue.

Add to the fact, that cultural Mormons are becoming more acceptable, ala catholicism and judaism and the LDS Church is likely retain even more membership.

I am afraid your prediction has little merit with the current variables.
