When I was a missionary, I invited people to watch conference because that's what my mission president wanted me to do. In fact, he wanted us to use the time between sessions to find people on the street to invite inside. I was bummed that I couldn't have a break from knocking doors and annoying people on the street for just one weekend.

I don't know about you, but I felt incredibly guilty any time I got any time to relax that wasn't P-day. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

My MP told us that once we had the laundry done, the grocery shopping done, and no more than 2 letters home per week written before 5 PM, p-day was over early and we were to go out tracting. Despite this and a few other turdy things like it, I did like my MP personally. His sense of humor came out very clearly in the months I was in the mission office.
I think missionaries invite people to watch GC in hopes of the attendee feeling "the spirit" and being led toward Mormonism. I had a missionary along with the bishop bring an audio recording of "the prophet" to my home for me to listen to. I believe the thought again was for me to feel the spirit and be drawn toward Mormonism. I don't think I was conditioned to get the warm fuzzies when the president of the LDS church speaks though.
