Re: What gave you fear in the Mormon religion?
I notice that most of the fears are based on what other people think about you. I guess image is everything. I remember one time telling my Grandmother that I didn't care what other people think and I got one of the longest and most severe scoldings I ever got in my life.
And yet on the other hand I was being taught not to judge. Go figure. It's like there is no sin as long no one else knows about it.
This has resulted in a family with so many past secrets it is both shameful and hilarious and totally dysfunctional.

I imagine in Why Me's ward growing up the girls were afraid of him ejaculating all over their light cotton clothing.

Why should I always associate? . .

...save the gifts that Clinton had given her during their affair, and not to dry clean what would later be known as "the blue dress."

Hmmm.
I feared being rejected by god, for sure. I wanted to be perfect so bad I literally prayed for it.
I think I also feared social humiliation and rejection, but not nearly so much (until now) because it wasn't like I was a major offense sinner. Now I am coming to accept that I will be rejected and I will still be just fine.

Hey I know what my problem was! I took Richard G. Scott too seriously. You know how some people have their pet enemy GA? I think Packer or Kimball has become the enemy to some folks around here. Scott was my most feared man on earth. Every time GC rolled around I would sit and wait for him to give his talk. I would listen for the words "serious sin" come from him. He terrified me.
This talk might have been the one that got me going down the track of fearing public humiliation.
Here is Richard's lovely intro:
then this:
The haunting words... "while you can."

Here is Richard's lovely intro:
Some of you look forward to being a missionary when you are older. Others are planning to go soon. I am sobered by the realization that some of you will not reach these worthy goals because of other choices you are making now.
then this:
A youth in serious trouble said: “I have done things that I knew were bad. I have been taught they were ever since I can remember. I know repentance is a great gift; without it I would be lost. But I’m not ready to repent of my sins, yet I know when I am ready I can.” How tragic. The thought of intentionally committing serious sin now and repenting later is perilously wrong. Never do that.13 Many start that journey of intentional transgression and never make it back. Premeditated sin has greater penalties and is harder to overcome. If there is sin, repent now—while you can.
The haunting words... "while you can."

My fear was simple: I knew I would never be good enough, never measure up to what I was expected to do.

I know it's not exactly the answer you're looking for in the OP, but this place.

I used to fear people would notice me trying to make out the nipples behind the wet white blouse the hot new investigator was wearing for her baptism.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

The more I know about, the more I completely don't blame you. What hellhole that place is.

I don't blame you - that place is ridiculous! A place for the LDS church to systematically abuse "trouble makers."
