Re: Question about nudes
Marg,
I can see how others would not find it profound. After many years of sharing my feelings on this story with fellow church members, I have come to realize that I uniquely internalize and idealize that story in my imagination. I love to idealize icons, marg. Jesus is an icon in the Book of Mormon.
Now you've got me. I don't have a convincing argument for the semi-usefulness of that book besides it being a canvas for my imagining an ideal.

by the way Zee... I don't think you have to worry about your kids seeing you draw nudes..it's watching horror films with them that you need to be careful of. My husband (when I went away for a weekend and our kids were young) decided to watch The Fly with them. They are now close to 30 years of age and only last week my son mentioned how he will not watch The Fly now(he might be joking). They were truly traumatized though when young.
Help me, help me!
All my girls saw both the 1950's and the 1980's version, probably around age 6 for the youngest, no trauma at all. The 6 year old is the most unwilling to "suspend disbelief" and critiqued the movie the whole time. At our house The Fly is not a horror movie, some parts are scary and creepy and others are "just stupid".

hanky panky?? I've translated it by the help of holy ghost
(or, better said) (or, in other words ©J.S.)
or by the help of common sense...

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is an interesting drawing program. The book has some good exercises and its an interesting approach to a realist technique.
You might also want to look at the work of people who draw quite differently, too. Gary Panter has always been a bit influence on me. I like looking at his sketchbooks as well as his "Jimbo" drawings.
The European design collective, Design Boom, also offers very fun and interesting online design courses (called "design aerobics") which are great for limbering up creativity. I took one on toy design and another on book design. I just looked at the 2012 offerings and the Graphic Design and Paper ones look fun.

zeezrom wrote:Thanks Runtu. This book is pretty graphic and it's the first of its kind in our house. I think I'll stick to drawing after the kids go to bed. I just finished a man standing, facing away from view. Fun!
by the way, I found a new fav painting: Primavera by Sandro Botticelli. Beautiful! More than Beautiful. It is Divine. This is way better than reading the Book of Mormon every night. Thank God I found that book semi-useless before my life ended.
With a little luck, you might even have the good fortune to find it utterly useless before your life ends.

Blixa,
My book is called, "Drawing the Human Body" by Giovanni Civardi. It is very right-brained.
Sock Puppet,

I didn't know you were a Sith! My sons would LOVE to meet you.

Re: Question about nudes
So, I posted about 30 of my current fav paintings on my Facebook account. One of these is Hermes and Athena by Batholomeaus Spranger. My wife looked over my selections and commented that many of our Facebook friends would consider these paintings pornography. I argued that many of these are used in college level humanities courses, like the one we attended together, years ago, at BYU. She agreed with me that you do indeed find this material in college courses but corrected me about the material used at BYU. Thinking back, I remember now that she is right.
She also reminded me that the people who have been talking about us, believing we have a porn problem, just got their confirmation with my latest Facebook post.
She brought forth a great example in the Spranger painting. She said if she was still TBM, that one in particular, would be suspect as porn material. Maybe porn is a subjective idea. The Mormon leadership certainly doesn't have a very good lock on the definition. Maybe BYU is doing their students a disservice by holding back in the visual arts department in the name of "modesty." In their efforts to remove porn from its members, they are actually creating more porn. What was never intended to be porn and is not considered porn by most people, the church has now created it out of thin air.
Rambling...

Re: Question about nudes
Here is the Spranger painting, baring both female and male breasts. Note that if the breasts were not shown, the fact that Athena is a woman would still be suspect. How many women back then fought in wars on a regular basis?
