Anyway, I think it's a good reflection on Mormons if they aren't uber orthodox about people with WoW issues.

Most people, Mormons especially, miss the main point of the Word of Wisdom: "Given . . . of all the Saints who are or can be called saints." (vs. 3.) In other words, it's a basic, bottom line entry level requirement. This religion will ask, eventually, for you to give everything you have from time and money to talents and even your life for the advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If a person can't give up a cup of coffee or a cigarette, they're not likely to be able to give up these other things. We can debate the health issues of caffeine 'til the cows come home. It's irrelevant. If God had told us to not eat carrots on Thursdays, that would be the issue; can we obey that injunction to prepare ourselves for greater tests of obedience? But, we'd probably wind up enlisting scientists and nutritionists to find out why carrots on Thursdays are a bad idea.

God told the people of Moses not to eat pork. We rationalize today that it was because of the possibility of trichinosis in under-cooked pork, a deadly disease. I don't think that was the issue; god could have just told them to be sure their pig was well-roasted. The issue was to get them in the habit of obedience. Same with seafoods. Same with the Word of Wisdom, though the harmful effects of tobacco and alcohol, beyond moderation, are obvious.

Consider it also as a "missionary" tool; when you're at a public dinner, and you take that coffee cup and turn it upside down on the saucer, everyone around you knows you're L.D.S. without you having to say a word, and the possibilities for advancing the gospel are present.

So, Word of Wisdom as missionary tool? Or as a test of obedience?

Why all the reinterpretations? Why not read that it was a word of wisdom, a piece of advice, that related to some health matters the Prophet that (or that God thought, and the Prophet channeled) were important for people to know? You know, as the text of the revelation actually says?

I can think of some good reasons you need to reinterpret it. They include that you recognize that some of the advice is faulty, and that some of it is ignored, and that the current LDS implementation of it is way different than its original intention. Since the actual wording of the revelation doesn't match the current implementation, one way to save oneself the cog-dis is to reinterpret it.

No they don't, they just know (if they even notice) that you don't want any coffee, why in the world do you think that people are paying that much attention to you or that they will know your LDS? Just because you are self conscious about your peculiarity it doesn't follow that those around you notice, or connect it with your religion.

Well they ban the two things that outsiders gather together to drink. It may be sad but it's understandable, it puts the kibosh on socializing with non-members. Members can't even attend and socialize while abstaining without giving the appearance of evil.

Please, Mr Monson. Please let your good people go. Let them love a morning drink. Let them smell the pungent, earthy, richness of heaven. Let them feel the warmth as it fills their bodies on a cold morning. Let the comfort come during a long morning at the office. Let the soft, darkness speak to their taste buds as they send their kids off to school.
