I am sure that most parents are with their children these days when they are outside. Too dangerous not to be. However, a happy family is wonderful. Plenty of time to go sledding and to go hiking during the week or on saturday. Also, a few hours at church and then sledding may be the answer. No problem there.

I still don't get the need for the three hour church block.

One of my favorite alternatives is just to do nothing at all.

Can we look forward to seeing you at church next week, Brother?

Three hours if you are lucky.

Seminar classes that meet once a week don't last 3 hours. Why does it have to be 3 hours +?

I went to church for close to 20 years and I don't have a good answer for this. The number one complaint amongst the LDS that I have come into contact with is the length of meetings. A couple of years ago a rumour was spreading like wildfire in my stake that the church was going to cut Sunday School from the curriculum. There was much rejoicing.

It never came to pass.

Now, consider that, on top of the 3 hour block, you have missionary firesides, youth firesides, Young Single Adult firesides, sometimes you have an additional 2 hour priesthood meeting in the evening. And if you are an unlucky sod, you will also have attended 2 hours of ward leadership meetings on Sunday as well.

I guess the best reason I could guess at is, if the church has you at church, you develop some type of social dependency on the church.

Actually one can just understand sacrament meeting and all will be well. No one will care if one leaves early if one does not have a calling.

Maybe. But my guess is: the church needs members to be involved because no one is being paid professionally to do it. No paid pastor and his advisory board to run the affairs of the church. However, one does not have to go to firesides etc. No one is forced to attend all the meetings. It is by choice.
