Romney was a leading voice against gay marriage as Massachusetts governor. The courts legalized gay marriage in the state during his tenure, but he supported a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
After gay marriage became legal, Romney sought to enforce a statute banning state officials from marrying gay couples from other states. In a speech to conservatives last winter, Romney touted that move, saying he prevented Massachusetts from becoming the "Las Vegas of gay marriage."

Panopticon, which of Newt Gingrich's relationships are you talking about? Or are you talking about all of them? The first one wasn't particularly long-term, as I recall it, and it's an open question how long he's going to stay faithful to Callista.

I don't know what concerns Mormons more, that he supports SSM, or that his views on SSM evolved.

There might be some Mormons who one or the other or both concern, but to be perfectly honest I'm one Latter-day Saint who doesn't really care about either one. People predict it's going to be a moral disaster, but personally I don't see why that's true. My own personal position has been for a time leaning toward the conclusion that SSM is pretty much inevitable, and I haven't gotten myself worked up over any of the recent gay rights advances.

For the record I do oppose SSM, but if it does get passed I don't see it as the moral catastrophe some Mormons say it would be.

We knew he always did. He's a Liberal. However, he used to say, for political advantage, that marriage isn't a civil right:

It's also rank hypocrisy now for Democrats and other Liberals to pan Obama's evolution on this issue and then criticize Romney's on any other.

Politically jumping toward favoring gay marriage is the right thing to do. Support for gay marriage is trending positively and I'm sure Obama wants to jump ahead of it before some liberal Republican tries to make a name for himself. Also it's good to do it now so it'll be more of a non-issue come November.

I think Obama has come down on the right side of this issue, and it is one that boxes Romney into his religion's stand--which is now shared by only a minority of Americans.

I do not think that it was mere coincidence that Biden teed this one on a Sunday talk show that allowed Obama to step up, address the issue and then drive it down Romney's throat. This is likely the first in a series of issues that the Obama campaign will bring up, Obama will take the correct stance and force Romney into the corner of his religion's increasingly anachronistic stance.

Since Obama cannot win re-election on the economy, it is a helluva a campaign strategy to make this election about personal liberty issues and paint Romney into the Mormon corner.

Obama wants the left to support him for this token measure. He wants them to forget his assault against civil liberties and his war mongering foreign policies.
