My attitude to this incident is quite strictly delimited: I am amused by DCP's obvious acute embarrassment about this incident, and by the fact that he is offering, as DrW points out, the kind of excuse that pretty well every person in trouble of this kind offers.
So what am I accusing DCP of? Well, at maximum I accuse him of looking a bit ridiculous, I suppose. That is a necessary consequence of his voluntary allegiance to a culture in which watching a silly little video like this one (for whatever reason) has the potential to become a matter of serious deliberation by those in authority. But that is the system he supports, and I can only hope he learns something from this situation.
Somehow I doubt he will.

Agreed. This is clearly a case of DCP being "Hoisted with his own petard".
There is nothing inherently wrong with adults watching a bump and grind video (or two). In his response to the release of the evidence that he watched a bump and grind video, DCP could have said as much.
Unfortunately, he didn't. He acted like a kid who had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. His defense boils down to the the idea that he was tempted by others beyond his ability to resist.

unfortunately daniel peterson's indiscretion will have the effect of him now having to wait for that " phone call" from his boss(es) to 'discuss the matter". i hope for his sake that the person to whom he reports will not be an a**h**. maybe the the boss is part of the ole boy network and let the incident slide. otoh dan has a reptuation that the slightest hint of being a secret porn viewer will rise up in the consciousness of his many friends and readers. once they hear the story, dan will suffer the behind the back, backchannel messaging guffawing, snide remarks-dan will suffer! and no more education week invites.

This is what bugs me about BYU, and why I could never teach there. I certainly hope that, if his higher ups are stupid enough to be concerned about this, that they will recognize the great loss they would experience if they decided to get rid of Dan. I hope that for Dan's sake, nothing comes of this. It certainly shouldn't.

I worry that this incident may lead Dan out of the church. We all know that one of the biggest reasons people leave the church is because they are addicted to porn. How ironic it would be that after defending the truly difficult issues like the Book of Abraham, Book of Mormon historicity, etc. that he leaves the church because of a porn addiction. He would be a walking, church approved example of why people leave.
