By contrast, I do think people should care what the LDS Church says. Contrary to a comment Blixa made in another thread, it is some of the best commedia dell'arte you will ever see.

Well yes. Here is one Commedia dell'arte character, Il Dottore:

Dottor Balanzone, a.k.a. "il Dottore"

The Dottore is not a physician, he just has a university degree. To hear him tell it, he probably has several of them.

Of course, he is from Bologna, home of Europe's oldest university. In fact, the Dottore is full of bologna. There's not a subject in the world on which he doesn't have a learned opinion, and he is never stingy in sharing these opinions with anyone within earshot – making ample use of standard Italian, bolognese dialect, and his stock in trade, maccheronic Latin.

He and Pantalone are sometimes allies and sometimes enemies, often the victims of each other's biased advice, but their schemes and machinations always seem to end up in much the same fashion: backfiring on them. Whereas Pantalone can always take solace in his money, the Dottore is happy to wax philosophical and will always be ready with a high-sounding misquotation or an elegant malapropism to give closure to yet another misadventure.

Familiar?
Zadok:
I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.
Maksutov:
That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

Frankly, I am sick of the media and celebrities attacking the Mormons nonstop while pulling their punches on other religions, like Islam.

Can we stop comparing criticism of Mormonism to criticism of Islam? The reason people don't make fun of Islam isn't because of respect for the religion; it's because certain adherents threaten to kill anyone who criticizes it.

A better comparison is with something like Scientology, which also has weird beliefs. Given that, you can easily find people who make fun of Xenu blowing up Thetans in a volcano. I just saw a tweet yesterday about Xenu and Tom Cruise's divorce.

Is it bigotry, or just lack of sensitivity? (It's the latter, by the way.)

Judaism is often criticized by people on the left. Haven't you heard someone mention that those who assert that "homosexuality is an abomination" must also stone shrimp eaters and disobedient children to death? That's a direct reference to the stupidity of sacred Hebrew scripture.

Did anyone see the Rupert Murdoch tweet about the Scientologists?

"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."

Are we all outraged at this right-wing geezer's bigotry?

Israel is often criticized by the left but not Judaism so much. Jews tend to be liberals.

I hear Jews criticized and ridiculed every night by Jon Stewart
....who as everyone knows is a Jew. Maybe Mormons need to lighten up a bit and get over the persecution complex?

There are probably Catholics out there who feel mocked and persecuted because someone came up with The Virgin Mary Toaster, some even more outraged that it has three stars on Amazon. It certainly pokes fun at all of the "Mary apparitions" in various food items and the Catholics who reverence them. Does mocking something qualify as persecution, I don't think so.

In high school I worked for a pizzeria and on rare occasions I would be asked to deliver orders if the drivers didn't come back soon enough. Mostly I was sent to those who were known to be bad tippers, primarily car dealers and once a huge evangelical church. I would drive the restaurants van which was plastered with the restaurants name, it was the vehicle used by the owners FIL Joe. He was a Greek immigrant and a devote Catholic and had a rosary hanging from the rear view mirror. When I delivered the pizzas to the church one of the kids(the one responsible for paying for the order) leaned in the van an flicked the rosary, it bounced off of the windshield and swung wildly about. He then went on to say something along the lines of "I'll give you a tip", idolatry, false religion, personal relationship with Jesus". I don't remember exactly what he said I was really pissed (and making sure that Jesus didn't fly about the car anymore  ) that he flicked Joe's rosary. Again is that persecution? I don't think so, it was disrespectful and it pissed me off but I wasn't subjected to persecution by the twits actions.

And just to be clear I wouldn't and have not referred to LDS garments as magic underwear, while I don't think doing so rises to persecution, I do find it a diss I can't do.
