The thesis of said paper is hopelessly ludicrous.

At the age of 20 I was entrusted to be leader of a congregation in Palermo, Italy, home of the mafia. This congregation was experiencing enormous problems because of the mafia, and I was helping congregation members two and three times older than me to deal with difficult challenges.

"They blew up Giovanni Falcone, but thank God now we've got some naïve 20 year-old American Mormon kid to take on the Mafia!"

The most revealing thing about LDS culture in that paper is the author's lack of self-awareness to such an extent that he can't grasp how much worse it is if his characterization of his missionary time in Palermo is accurate.
