I wonder why Monson teaches the exact opposite?

You mean like this?

Thomas S. Monson, March 2009 Ensign

Faith and doubt cannot exist in the same mind at the same time, for one will dispel the other.

And that's from the living prophet, too---not one of those dead ones that are no longer relevant to the Church.

Elder Kevin W. Pearson, April 2009 General Conference

Doubt is not a principle of the gospel. It does not come from the Light of Christ or the influence of the Holy Ghost. Doubt is a negative emotion related to fear. It comes from a lack of confidence in one’s self or abilities. It is inconsistent with our divine identity as children of God.

Romney is absolutely a TBM. He is absolutely obsessed with money and power and wants to be President more than any major party candidate who has ever run for the office (well, maybe Nixon or Clinton could match him there). And his Mormonism is a huge disadvantage. If he were not a true believer, he would have left long ago. His financial success would have given him a network outside the "Mormon mafia" to fund his campaign. And he could have saved millions in tithing. If he were not a true believer, he would be in a much better position to win the Presidency. It's a huge handicap for him. If he were not a TBM, I think he would have picked Marco Rubio as Veep. But since Rubio is an apostate ex-Mormon, Romney just could not stomach having him on the ticket. Again, that decision hurts his chances to win. Rubio would have sealed Florida and helped immensely in Colorado and Nevada.

Right. Fear is an emotion related to doubt. Funny how convoluted that got, isn't it?

He doesn't. It is quite natural to doubt when there is faith. It is also apart of the human condition to doubt that which is unknown or does not require evidence. Everyone has doubted at one time in their life.

I know a geologist who believes in the young earth as described in the Bible. Some people have massive shelves.

Lets try this again: we all have doubts. Whether we should feed our doubts is the question. He is also implying that doubt can be negative because it can cause us not to embrace change or better prospects because we can doubt our abilities.
