Harold Lee wrote:I doubt it took 3 years to write the Book of Mormon. Maybe the writing but the stories it has he'd been telling and thinking up all his life.
The whole concept of a spooky ghost visiting him to tell him of buried gold treasure was from BEFORE he turned 17 (which you know what he alleged at that age).
The Book of Mormon has such little original and storyline content to it I don't think he needed much help coming up with the ideas. It was the English he needed help with.
Ah, so you base your assertions on Mormonism Unvailed. That is hilarious. Is Howe (or his modern-day counterpart Dan Vogel) your chief and only source of information on the Book of Mormon?
"You lack vision, but I see a place where people get on and off the freeway. On and off, off and on all day, all night.... Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful." -- Judge Doom
Well, if you read Dan Vogel's Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet 2004, you have read Howe's Mormonism Unvailed of 1834. It is just the modern-day equivalent.

I have the collectors editions on my nightstand, but you're right- that's all just crazy. Really Joseph Smith was a true prophet and he dictated the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God.

That's special. Why don't you try actually speaking with God about it instead of just agreeing with me? It might do you a lot of good.

Correct again, I've never tried it before (or never seriously) so I will do that tonight. This is very special, thank you.

Uh huh. I don't think it works that way. We aren't talking about putting on a new pair of shoes here.

Dedicate your life to doing what God wants and seeking him and we'll talk in 30 years. That is that is the attitude it takes. You seem to think God is going to answer you because you are going to say a prayer. Hardly. God knows you. Don't think for an instant you can fool God and believe that he'll just answer you because you demand it. It isn't likely to happen.

So it takes all that to know the Book of Mormon is true? That's a lot of commitment. I think I'd like a little closure before making a 30 year investment like that. I'm pretty sure I've heard if you say you know it's true enough times, something along the lines of testimony is found in the bearing of it. That is NOT how finding how accurate something is works.
by the way I know what's going on here lol. RM, various ward leadership callings, ordinance worker, etc. Just saying I honestly don't think there's a time I've personally seen or heard something supernatural. Quite the contrary however, and a couple personal experiences convinced me it was hokey all along, and that was hard to accept. All these logical and historical reasons I wouldn't have listened to and just dismissed, but now I'm amazed how much writing on the wall I ignored. Religion does some funny things to you.
